Where is Playa Cosón?
Playa Cosón is located in the northern part of the Dominican Republic, in the province of Samaná, more specifically in the area of Las Terrenas. It is approximately 158 kilometres from the capital, Santo Domingo. Its name comes from the fact that it is located at the mouth of the Cosón River, making it a unique space with one of the best sunsets in the country.
How to get to Playa Cosón in Samaná
Getting to Playa Cosón may take you more or less time depending on where you depart from. From Santo Domingo, the bus ride takes only two and a half hours. From Playa Bávaro, for example, the journey takes six hours and forty-five minutes. As always, there is also the option of getting a taxi or renting a car. This makes the trip from Santo Domingo barely two hours, and from Playa Bávaro it is only four hours. You can choose between the different options depending on how much time you have to explore Playa Cosón.

This beach is a true paradise. Once you’re here, you’ll be able to see how everything that surrounds it is practically a virgin landscape. There will be no shortage of coconut and palm trees that help give all parts of the Dominican Republic that exotic feel. Do you love sunsets? In that case, you should know that you can see one of the most incredible sunsets on the island from here. Without a doubt, an invaluable memory to take back with you from your holidays that you’ll want to immortalise in lots of pictures so that you never forget it.
Its location at the mouth of the river and its geographic layout means that it has bigger waves than other beaches, so children shouldn’t swim unattended. But it is precisely this small swell that makes it one of the favourite destinations for those who really know how to enjoy water sports. Surfing, windsurfing or kitesurfing are just some of these sports that you can practice on this beach. But, if you are looking for something calmer, you can also go diving or snorkelling to admire the underwater wonders. How many types of fish or crustaceans can you find?
If you prefer to be out of the water, you’ll find more than six kilometres of white sandy beach to go for a leisurely walk on while enjoying all the beauty of Playa Cosón and the Dominican Republic’s sun.
Very close to Playa Cosón is the Cosón viewpoint. From here you can admire the immensity of the beach from a higher vantagepoint, seeing how the vivid colours such as the blue of the sky, the turquoise of the sea and the green of the vegetation seem to merge together to create this magical place. Did you ever expect to find such a beautiful environment?

The beach and its surrounding area have lots of culinary options to choose from. Here you can taste some of the country’s typical dishes such as mangú, patacón or mofongo. Most of the restaurants are focused on seafood, which stands out for its incredible freshness, with local fish and shellfish.
